This pattern is only for private use.
Yarn: Novita Tennesee, 94 g. This is a Finnish yarn, 100% mercerized cotton with gauge 22s = 4″, and yardage 100g = 234 yards.
Needels: 3 ½ mm circular needle and 3 ½ mm dpn’s for the crown decreases.
Size: woman/man

Thank you for sharing your great hat pattern. It is just perfect for men ! I have made 2 in the last week, one for my husband and one for the son in law, nothing fancy - just blue dk wool and gray dk wool, but they love them- very warm ! I will be making more as all the men who see them want one. Thanks again for sharing your beautiful work.
Hello!
I love your hat! I would love to attempt it, although I’m a ‘nervous’ knitter, meaning, I knit simple stuff. Such as dishcloths, afghans, that kind of thing. I also wanted to say hello to a fellow Finn. My Dad’s parents were Finn, so I’m a 2nd generation Finn, living in Canada. I am sure my grandfather shortened our last name, Maki, from something much longer. Do you know any Maki’s? Thx for your reply!
Kim Maki (there should be 2 dots over the a)
Thank you for this nice pattern! I want to knit it for my Husband and both of my daughters…
Knittaxa
I am making this hat but the crown decreases are very slow so the top of the hap has
oops…
I meant to say that the top of the hat has become very pointy because there are only 4 stitches decreased per row, unless I misunderstood something.
Many patterns say to decrease every other round, but you don’t specify in the English instructions, so I did only decrease on every other round, but it didn’t work out for me. So, I’m going to use the decreases from this pattern instead:
http://stephanieknits.blogspot.com/2007/03/keeping-boyfriends-ears-warm-since-2006.html
Hello Kim! Nice to have you here. I prefer simplicity, even thoug I knit very muck. Mäki is common last name in Finland, but there are longer versions too. I don’t know any Makis personally. I had a frien called Mäkinen at High School.
Heather, you have done the decreases on every row. Then it should happen as shown in the picture. If you have much thicker yarn, in might be the reason. Good that you found help and you’ll get your hat finished.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful pattern.
My hubby loves it.
I only used 120 stitches for him. I used another yarn and it was enough.
Thanks once more
and a lot of greets from Germany
Iris
thanks very much for this pattern! I have been wanting to make this and am glad there is now an english version
is the decrease, knit one, then knit a second, then pass the first over the second and drop it off? so you knit two stitched but end up with one? I dont understand how knit, knit, slip decreases any stitches, unless you mean knit, knit, pass?
It is slip one over the two knitted ones. I hope this help. Can anyone explain it better, pleas help us.
Thanks very much for sharing this wonderful pattern.
I knit it for my husband, he loves it.
I knit it with thinner yarnand used 160 stitches for him.
I knit 8 decreases in every row an it was perfect.
Greetings from Germany

I love this pattern! I just finished mine and it’s so lovely. I hope the recipient - an Alaska crab fisherman - appreciates it! I am adding a knit lining in and that isn’t done yet, but I really enjoyed knitting it! I may do it again with less stitches on worsted weight yarn.
Hej,
I was glad to find your pattern. It was lovely to knit and it fits well.
You can see it here:http://board.stricknetz.net/blog/susannekris/index.php?
Thank you Susanne
Thanks for the great pattern. I love the swirl effect with the ribbing.
I plan on making a few. Greetings from Atlanta, Georgia, US.
Hi!
Many thanks for sharing this very nice pattern.
I knit the first one for my husband and he love it.
At the moment I’m knitting No. 2 and 3 for my little son and me.
Greetings from Bavaria
Tanja aka FrauWocken at Ravelry
I am at the point in the patter where the decreases begin. Do I change to the double pointed needles for this part?
Thank you
I change when the circular needle starts to be too long and it’s hard to knit, so much later than at the point where you start the decreases.
Thank’s for sharing!
This is now my go-to pattern when I need to make a medium-weight hat for a bloke. I’ve just finished my fourth one for a friend at work. :o) Thanks for sharing it with us!
Many thanks for your Cousteau hat pattern. I think there is one error in the following line of the English translation:
KKS, place marker, knit 28/33 in rib pattern, KKS, place marker, knit 2
Shouldn’t that last direction be purl 2? That’s how every other segment of the pattern ends and how I knitted it. If I knitted two it would destroy the pattern.
See my two hats at the Ravelry link–and my husband, son, and grandson love their hats!
Nola
I hope this gets to you. I didn’t know what Kotisivu meant
Thanks Nola. There really was an error and I corrected it already. I’m happy so many of you have found my pattern so “knitable” and useful
Hi! I stop here to say thank you for a wonderfull hat pattern.
I made one for my dad, then one more for my husband.
I think I’d like to make some more…maybe for myself.
Anyway I spent a great knitting time, fully enjoyed.
I just wonder if you named this pattern after a French scientist
Jacque-Yves Cousteau? I didn’t know him, but I searched on the web, and I found his name and felt interesting!
Oh, I just forget to say I’m from Japan,
and saw your pattern on Raverly for the first time.
Many other Japanese Raverly members make and love this hat.
I put my Raverly profile link.
Hi Silverspoon and thank you. I’m happy to hear that my hat is knitted also in Japan. I’m very interested in your culture especially gardening and origamis.
Yes, in fact the hat is named after The French scientist Jacques Cousteau, because he was the hero of my childhood. And he’s red hat is part of that man’s image.
Thank you for the great hat pattern!
Hello
Thank you for making this pattern available. I will be knitting it for my son, who lives in the south island of New Zealand.
So as you can see it is travelling far and wide.
Ellie, this is amazing! And one of the reasons why I keep doing this. So nice to have you here and the hat in New Zealand.
Wow, this is brilliant! I can’t wait to make it. My husband is Finnish. I’ll make one for him and our son. Thanks so much for sharing it with everyone.
Hello, I found your blog when I searched for this hat, so I’ve used the pattern. I’ll blog my hat in a few days. Thank you;)
All these wonderful knitting stories around the world. This time I’m so happy of Erica’s story. I’m really considering to write in English as well.
Thanks so much for sharing your pattern!
Thanks for sharing, the “twisting” was great fun! My version is to be found both on Ravelry anf my blog
I saw this pattern on Ravelry and cannot wait to cast on. Thank you for having the pattern translated.
Thank you for posting this pattern.
I knitted it in Sirdar Eco-Wool for my dad for Christmas and he loved it - hats never fit him, but this one did!
Thanks Typy for this lovely pattern, I made it for a charity project, I’m sure someone will be very happy with this warm hat. I’ll be making more of this no doubt as my husband couldn’t wait to get his own!
HELP ~
Do I replace the marker from previous row after each KKS ?!
I have repeated the decrease 3 times and it still doesn’t make sense to me =(
Decreases happen at the same places on every row, so you don’t need to remove your marker. Hope this helped.
Hello,
I’m making my third of this hat; it’s a great pattern. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Hi -
I am trying to figure out the gauge because I am not very good about figuring out yarns and such yet. When doing 22s = 4″, is that in the rib stitch and do I stretch it to get to 4″ or leave it slack? Thanks!
Mel
The gauge is the standard gauge, that you can read from yarn balls’ tags.
I made this in a children size in thinner yarn. It turned out beautifully and was well appreciated. Thank you for the pattern.
Hello!
Thanks for the great pattern. I love it!

I’m so excited to begin! This will be my first ribbed pattern, my first hat & my first gift for my husband
Thanks a million for posting it!
Thanks for creating and publishing this pattern. It looks great and I am curious how the finished one will look like.
Hello from another Heather. I am knitting this toque for my boyfriend, but I would like to thrum it as it gets very cold in my part of Canada. Do you have any idea when I should start that? I have about 2″ knit so far…
Thanks for posting this pattern. This cap will be donated as a chemo cap for a chemotherapy patient through a US organization, Knots of Love. KOL has recently added several of VA hospitals (Veterans Administration, which provides medical care to former military personnel) to its donations list. The costeau cap is a good masculine design; I modified it to be worn without a cuff.
Heather Laura,
I haven’t thrummed these caps, but I suppose you want to cover the area of ears. So I’d started after knitting 7 or 8 cm and thrum approx 7 cm. I hope this helps and works for you.
Carolyn and other donating Jacques Cousteau Cap knitters,
I’m so happy that there are so many of you and that you find my pattern useful to do these really sweet things. This is definitely one of the big bonuses with free pattern design.
A great hat pattern! Easy & quick!

I’m going to try this to knit a hat for my best friend! I love the look of it.
What a perfect har for a guy! I am about and inch and a hlf into the pattern right now but I’m wondering about the 140 sts. Might it be too many? I am using 3.5 mm (size 4 US) needles, so I’ll keep stiching away, just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on the sizing.
Thanks for a great pattern! It will be great for our Chicago winters!
Love the hat pattern and am anxious to try it! Hopefully it will look as good as yours! Thanks for sharing
Jillian, if your knitting isn’t really tight and your yarn is thicker than the one I used. It might be better to knit the hat with 120 sts. 140 sts. has turned out to be too many for some knitters.
Hi! I’m just moving on to the decreases and don’t understand the “*Work to two stitches of marker, KKS, repeat from *” part. Can you expand on what actually has to be done? Does “of marker” mean ‘before marker’? Thanks so much!
Jacob,
KKS two stitches before marker and repeat KKS on the same places on every row. All together 4 times per row. Hope this expansion helps you.
[...] Jacques Cousteau-Hat [...]
Thank you for this, just what I need to whip up some last minute presents
So the stitch that you slip over should the be one directly above the marker?
So the stitch that you slip over should be directly above the marker? And do you knit it even if it’s a purl stitch?
Yes, KKS should be directly above the marker on the 2nd decrease row. The decreases form a curve and KKS moves to the right on every row, even if it’s a purl stitch.
Thanks for the great pattern! I’ve found it great to sit and do while I’m watching the baby play. I’m making 2 of them, one for a deployed troop member that my son’s Cub Scout pack adopted for the holidays, and one for my husband to wear with his work uniform! I’m using Patton’s Classic wool, Worsted weight and size 3.75mm dpns.
Hi, I love your hat pattern! I work at a brand new LYS and am going to do a ‘Knit Your Man a Hat’ Class. I would really like to use your pattern. Let me know what you think!! krishell@gmail.com Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this pattern! I’m making one in grey and maroon for a friend who has been begging me to knit him a hat. Most men’s hat patterns are so boring I can’t bare to use them, but this one has such a wonderful design on the top.
I just made one of these for my brother for Christmas. It’s a great pattern, very easy to work. I like the way it turned out so much, I think I’ll make one for myself. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for the pattern. I just made one for my son and it turned out great.
[...] The pattern was straightforward. As mine was intended for a six year old, I cast on only 100 sts and adjusted the decreases at the top accordingly. Also, I used ssk decrease instead of the prescribed kks. I love how the decreases line up on the top of the hat. Also, it has room for adapt to a growing head. [...]
Hello
thank you for sharing this wonderful hat i am about to start making one for my hubby. i am a little confused by the line ..
‘work to two stiches of marker’ - what does this mean i am sorry i am not very experienced. maybe this hat is too difficult for me!
any advice would be welcomed. i will start and hopefully by the time i get to this point it will be clearer!
with kind regs
sonya pettigrew
Thanks for the pattern. I made it in red and it came out just like yours. Will give it to my scuba-loving dad for Christmas. Were I to make it again, I might use wool instead of cotton, for warmth and for a snugger fit since wool has more spring to it.
hello again… not a good start i cast on 120 stitches on circular kneedles but its way too big?! according to the wool i need to actually cast on 70 stitches for the 21 inch head of my husband! the wool i am using is 14 stitches per 4 inches.
am i going in the right direction ?
with kind regards
sonya
The direction is right, but I’d use smaller needles and 80 stitches. That way you could use my pattern directly and end up with a similar hat.
I’m making this as a gift. The decrease pattern really appeals to me! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this pattern! =)
love the pattern - just starting 4th set of decreases. used ella rea superwash and cast on 100 stitches and using a 4.25 needle. the crown looks so clever! thank you for sharing.

I knitted this with Lion Brand wool, two strands, with size 10 needles (6 mm). Getting 12 st/4 inches (20 cm), I casted on 80 stitches. My decrease row was rib 16, kks, place marker, rib 18, etc.
Love the pattern! Knit in one afternoon. This fit my husband with 26″ (66 cm) head size.

I love the hat. At first I had doubts about how it would turn out, but I just finished it and simply adore it. Thanks for sharing the pattern!
I knit it on 5.0 mm DPNs with light yarn, following the men’s size instructions. Instead of doing 8 inches as specified, however, I did 4.5, since I didn’t want a brim that had to be folded. It worked out perfectly
Thanks for creating and publishing this pattern. Quite easy to adapt with another yarn. My son looks great with his new hat!!

My daughter picked Jacques Cousteau for her school biography project. Part of the project included writing a poem about Cousteau to recite on stage. The kids dressed up as the person they researched and the parents, in the audience, guessed who they researched. The Cousteau cap was, of course, a key element in her costume. I knitted your cap with Rowan Scottish Tweed DK. I used the color 11 - Sunset which is more orange than red. The cap was perfect! Thanks for sharing!

I used 2 skeins of Superlana by Lana Grossa and had to change nothing to make your pattern work.
I’m 5″ (120 stitches) into a 2×1 rib hat & realized I don’t know how to decrease in this stitch pattern to shape the crown. Can you help me convert your Jacques Cousteau hat pattern to finish my hat? Any response would be greatly appreciated!

Tay Taw,
KKS (Knit-knit-slip= knit two stitches and then slip the first of these two over the second). With those keywords (Google them) you will find a video which will guide you through. It’s not complicated at all, but much easier to understand with the video.
Merrill,

Hi,
I’m having problems locating a place in Florida,U.S.A. were this yarn is sold i would love to make this hat for my boyfriend since he is always at sea, like Jacques Cousteau. can any one help me he would love it in red.
That yarn is a Finnish one and I think you cannot find it from Florida. The yarn details: DK / 8 ply (11 wpi), Gauge 22 stitches = 4 inches, Needle size US 4. I’m sure you will find similar yarn with those details. Then you just need to feel the fibers and choose the color. I recommend to buy one extra ball, since the pattern’s yarn is not available
I’ve just started knitting hats and found pattern through ravelry. When I’m finished with the two others in the pattern I’m currently working, I cannot wait to move on to this pattern. Oklahoma winters can be somewhat unpredictable so a warm hat as stylish as this one will come in handy.

I have 5 rows done, hah, but I should finish it for Christmas. I also used 120 stitches. My hubby will be very happy with this hat, I just know it.

Hi there! I just started your pattern tonight using a worsted weight yarn on US size 6 needles, cast on 100 stitches. I hope that will work out correctly! I believe the US equivalent to your KKS is a “SSK” (slip, slip, knit) or “SKP” (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over. Both make a left-leaning decrease, opposite of a K2tog (knit 2 together).
Thank you for the great free pattern!
I have been wanting to make this and am glad there is now an english version

Hello from Canada!
I don’t know where I went wrong!
I knit this hat for my fiance for Christmas, using 3.5 mm needles and Paton’s Canadiana worsted weight acrylic yarn. I cast on 120 stitches, and followed the ribbing and decreases to a tee… BUT… the hat turned out to be enormous! Even with rolling the brim, it looks silly on his average-sized head and protrudes off the back into a point.
I love the concept of the pattern but mine didn’t turn out like the pictures. Other knitters should definitely take caution and use a minimum number of stitches to cast on! Thanks.
